Another great Thanksgiving, this year in LA where our family keeps expanding. LA traffic is always terrible, so I didn't think much of it when we were stuck in traffic leaving my brother's around 11pm Thanksgiving evening. It wasn't until we approached a mall exit when I realized the roads were practically gridlocked thanks to what quickly became Black Friday Eve. After having spent a full day cooking, eating and visiting, I couldn't even imagine the idea of hours waiting in line for a bargain to ultimately overspend on senseless material possessions.

I admit, I do get a chuckle at the insane shoppers in the Target and Walmart ads that are unfortunately way too close to the truth but I have to wonder how many people are actually getting a Lexus this year as a holiday gift. Maybe I will be lucky enough to receive a cell phone or music box that has been pre-programmed to play a magical little jingle to suggest what is waiting (with a big red bow) for me outside my home. A little far fetched, don't you think?

Worth a Pretty Penney?

You can try, but you can't take the heart, soul and thoughtfulness out of my creative process. And it doesn't come for free either. It's disheartening when I continue to read about well established companies seeking out free work from the minds of creative professionals. How many other service areas can you "try on" professional knowledge and experience before you choose which one you are going to compensate? The sad truth is as long as individuals, agencies, or even students, continue to give away valuable work, this issue will never go away and our reputation as one unified, talented and important industry will continue to be damaged and taken advantage of.

In the news: JCPenney has rebranded themselves. Er, let me rephrase that since the term 'rebrand' applies to a more intelligent strategy and process...JCPenney got a new logo! There, that sounds more like it.

You can read the press release for yourself here, but the new mark is "symbolizing jcpenney's transformation to become America's favorite shopping destination for discovering great styles at compelling prices."

I could easily criticize the fact that the 'jcp' within the red box is so distracting that it reads as "jcp enney" rather than "jc penney." I could argue if this is in fact a "modern logo" and it's debatable whether or not the "fresh, bold design" actually "evokes a sense of movement and discovery as the letters appear to break out of the box, symbolizing an emergence into an exciting, new future." But that's not even the biggest problem. If they worked through a creative process where each decision was intentionally made to support the original goal, then who am I to say this is a right, or wrong solution. There are some obvious readability issues that I would think could be argued as "wrong," but if the process supports the intention, then time will tell if this new logo holds up. Fun fact: the previous logo was originally designed by the great and powerful Massimo Vignelli and for the most part has held strong for 40 years. Timeless.

But the REAL issue that is making many creative professionals absolutely crazy is that this new logo is the result of contest. jcp enny "sought submissions that reflect a wide range of perspectives. Participants included the Company's associates, several design agencies and two art schools...and the winning design was provided be Luke Langhus..." Congrats to the third year design student at University of Cincinnati, but I hope as he continues to be educated on best practices and the value of a brand and his own skills, that he realizes that this cannot be a logical process for a billion dollar company to take on.

Spec work severely cheapens the service that is provided. The design industry takes pride in the skills we have, and the knowledge to be able to share these skills to help communicate important messages to the rest of the world. Our creative vision only works when we fully understand what the client is intending to communicate - it's a privilege to be able to partner with companies and work through their thoughts and vision to create a solution that was hopefully even better than what they had originally imagined. You can't expect that level of partnership and intimate collaboration to be achieved through a contest. Crowdsourcing may give you a nice batch of fine looking work to choose from, but a strong brand needs to go so much deeper than simply looking nice. I would be curious to see how much background info was provided before all these designs were submitted.

I digress. I am so proud to be in the design community and it just makes me so upset that those who should know better stoop to such cheap levels to take advantage of our skill. I am sure it will be a never-ending battle, but it sure is worth the fight.

A Brooklyn Brand, Brewing Strong

Brooklyn Brewery, located in Williamsburg, NY, has been around since 1988 and this weekend I decided to check it out. Admission is free and once inside you can jump into a quick tour, or purchase drink tokens to hang out and sample the brews.

What was once uninhabited and desolate land on the other side of the river has turned into a very trendy neighborhood over the past decade thanks to artists and small businesses moving in and taking advantage of cheap prices. As trends will have it, Williamsburg has evolved into a very culturally eclectic and desirable location leading to a quick rise in population and with that, a rise in cost of living and doing business. But the brewery will remain in Brooklyn and recently took on additional space with plans to begin expanding within the next few years.

Legendary Milton Glaser (you may know him best for the "I love NY" logo) worked with brewery owners Tom Potter and Steve Hindy in creating the corporate identity and from there all the packaging and communication design for the brand. If you are not familiar with industry practices, a true branding and identity project is a very involved process and could be attributed to some of the best spent time, energy and money when working on building a company. We learned from the tour that Tom and Steve had really wanted Milton Glaser to design their logo but a project like this would cost them something in the $40,000 range which was about double what they had budgeted for the process. They approached Mr. Glaser to see what they could afford and whether true or not, the story goes that Milton Glaser told them to forget about their money and that he would be happy to take on the project and all he wanted in return was a small share in the company and free beer for the rest of his life. The best business deal ever made, some would say. Now in his early 80s, Mr. Glaser is probably still benefiting from this clever contract that was made 24 years ago.

Brown Ale, IPA, Lager, Penant Ale, Pilsner and a Weisse make up the core brews while a Summer Ale, Oktoberfest, Pumpkin Ale, and Winter Ale are some of the specialty seasonal blends.

The Brooklyn Brewery logo features a "B" emblem which was influenced by the original Brooklyn Dodgers. The color story changes with each bottle, creating a colorful blend of packaging. Below are a few pictures from the visit while I enjoyed a pint of the pilsner and listned to the brief history of the local brewery.

It's all in how you look at it.

Color has a tremendous effect on the way we perceive, feel, and respond to just about anything we look at.

When it comes to consumer products, I like to believe that I am a brand conscious shopper, rather than impulsively making my decision based on appearance. OK, it's the inner substance and performance that you are looking for but looking good on the outside certainly can't hurt, right?

Pantone revealed that the new color of the year is Honeysuckle (or, 18-2120).

Design for Haiti

Throughout history, the design community has played an integral role at helping to communicate the need for aid during times of crisis. Whether it be promoting benefits, or simply visually expressing the severity of the tragedy to bring awareness, design has the power to evoke emotion with the intention to lead to action.

Here we are 1 year after the horrific hurricane devastated Haiti and much of it's spirit, and we look back at the progress that has been made.

Mr. Robert Greene, a Buffalo lawyer who out of the good of his heart assisted me when I was starting my business, has had a personal connection to the residents of Port-au-Prince, in particular, the Notre Dame de Lourdes orphanage. The building was both a clinic and an orphanage, and all the efforts at providing medical equipment, clean water, food, education, and a safe environment was lost with the storm.

Wanting to do something, this was clearly the organization that I could comfortably contribute to, knowing that in a very small but important way, I am possibly showing my gratitude and making a difference in the lives of those who need it so desperately.

I will continue to support when I can in hopes that in 2011, all those working with the orphanage will be able to fulfill the goal of successfully rebuilding in 2011. They have already received over $350,000 of their $400,000 goal to fund the new building. (www.haitianorphanagefund.com)

Tragedies like the events in Haiti have called for support on many different levels.

The Haiti Poster Project was established last year, immediately after the earthquake. Designers from around the world created limited edition signed posters, with all money raised to be donated to Doctors Without Borders.

I realized that it had been a while since I had purchased some new design books, so I was excited to receive a handful of excellent selections this year under the tree...

Unimark International: The Design of Business and the Business of Design

I am partially biased to this book because of it's insightful author, my former design professor whom I admire greatly, Jan Conradi. After reading just a few pages, I knew this was going to be a great reference tool and story that I would be reading from front to back. Unimark was an international design house that paved the way for modern day design and marketing approaches. To this day, you can identify many of it's corporate identities still being used, proving it's timelessness.

Things I have Learned in My Life So Far: Stefan Sagmeister

Sagmeister has been a very influential but often controversial designer, brilliantly using his quick wit and sarcasm as the basis for much of his work. After decades of accomplishments under his portfolio, he went on hiatus and created a series of experimental projects which illustrate some of the important lessons he has discovered throughout his career. Each narrative is executed in it's own booklet which is then compiled into a die-cut portrait illustrated book cover, allowing you to change the look of the book's box cover by choosing which booklet you place on top - a unique element to the presentation keeps the holder engaged and humorously eludes to the playful quality of Sagmeister and his creations.

Trek: David Carson

Looking for a dose of inspiration? David Carson never fails. With his careful attention to typographic details, Trek is a collection of work that will help you to step out of the boundaries and look at design as more of an artistic expression, rather than a mundane and expected solution. Better yet, it reminds us that design can successfully communicate in this expressive manner, without needing to be so literal. Carson, along with Sagmeister, are 2 examples of design icons that make being a part of this industry so exciting to me. They make statements, and people are noticing.

Stamp of Approval

As much as I embrace the efficiency of email and online business transactions, I get excited when I open my tiny mail box and see a handwritten addressed envelope (not the #10 white containing bills). Colored envelopes are deserving of a greater reaction, and I am even more responsive when the upper right hand corner is artistically adorned.

I think part of my New Year's resolution is to send more personal mail. Maybe I can even start a pen pal-like system with a special friend, or better yet dear old Nana.

A few years ago, I was lucky to cross paths with a "friend-of-a-friend" who was so diligent about sending hand-written notes, just because. Even while she was temporarily sharing our apartment, she would send little post cards and folded up brochures that were overwritten with a small, but thoughtful message. A simple "hello, I am thinking about you," goes a long way.

The 2011 Stamp program has been released. Lots of colors, designs, historical reminders, and modern-day references make up the collection.

Thinking Outside the Grid

Last night I attended the FIT visiting artist program which featured David Carson, the former pro surfer who has turned into one of the most innovative graphic designers and typographic idols of our time.

I discovered David Carson during my college days, and at that point he was already published in our textbook – Phil Meggs "A History of Graphic Design."

What makes him so unique is that he has never had any formal design training. His success reminds us that your best work should be a result of what you interpret from your life's experiences, and your ability to create something beautiful is based on your own intuition that nobody else can share.

He breaks all of the rules we have ever been taught, and he gets paid to do it! I think most agree that we wish our clients let us get away with some of the things he has been able to create. His dry sense of humor is often reflected in his work, but he also has an honest sensibility to serious subjects; his work truly reflects the subject matter. I can't tell you how many times I have been working on a project when clients have told me to "just leave room for text" and design around that until they send us the copy. Wait, you want me to design something that I don't even get to read?How am I supposed to do that when I don't even know what it is about? Carson's playful and illustrative typography in all of his work adds the visual interest to lure you in. So what if the kerning is spacious and the leading is so tight you have to squint to follow the crooked columns, if the subject matter is interesting, it will hold your attention.

His message is so simple - make sure your audience gets an accurate emotional response when they first are exposed to your message. As Carson says "Don't mistake legibility for communication."

In true California casual manner, Carson kept his audience entertained as he worked through some technological malfunctions to start the lecture. It was well worth the wait to see some new projects he has been working on, and to be inspired by his philosophy on life: allowing your work to be a reflection of the little things that you notice every day, as well as your combined life's experiences and with that your work becomes your pleasure.

Uh, oh...looks like Apple is getting a little taste of it's own medicine. The new T-Mobile myTouch 4G has made its debut by mimicking the "I'm a Mac" campaigns that were so simply clever. In it's own original ad, Apple always appeared to be stronger and healthier, slicker and more stylish than it's PC frenemy, whereas it now appears to be weighed down by 3G speed in comparison to the brighter and, well, more attractive T-Mobile 4G model.

There have been many television ads recently starring babies: E*TRADE, the Evian roller skaters, and my new favorites being Huggies. Everyone loves a cute baby; adding in a voice-over which suggests the tone of voice and personality of the cute little face and ending up with the perfect combination of charm and humor. I have laughed out loud at the following few ads, and then, even felt empathy towards a rubber duck in the final example...a true moment of sorrow came over me as I watched the sad little toy get repeatedly let down.

New Summer Spiked Flavor

I am quickly learning about all the quirky behaviors and habits that make Brooklyn as eccentric as it is.

I wonder what proper protocol is for joining a stoop group? Stoop life is pretty big here in Brooklyn. From early morning, into late evening, groups of neighbors gather together and hang out on someone's stoop. They chit-chat about latest headline news, some shameless self-promotion about their families, and of course, the street gossip. I am not sure if the 60-80 year olds on my block would appreciate me pulling up a chair, but if I can find a way to get in with the crowd, I would love to partake in some of the stoop life.

I have yet to try it, but native Brooklyner Spike Lee and Absolut collaborated on the new Absolut Brooklyn. With a hint of apple and ginger, it depicts the rich and spicy flavor of Brooklyn with funky label artwork portraying "the stoop;" rendered after Spike Lee's childhood home. The limited edition is also donating $50,000 to Habitat for Humanity which will be used to benefit homes in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

I'm Luvin It

We once knew McDonalds as being simply a fast-food chain. If you were a kid it meant happy meals with free toys. (Today that toy has been replaced with "hope"). If you were an adult it probably meant cheap convenience on the go. If you were me it meant devastation to the digestive system. It would seem logical that a traditional fast-food chain couldn't stand a chance to survive today unless it jumped on the health food wagon in some capacity.

For example, Taco Bell has initiated a "Drive-Thru Diet" which offers 7 menu items that contain less than 9 grams of fat and fewer calories than their other menu items. They have even mimicked Subway's "Jared" campaign and got their own Christine to share her story of how she lost 54 pounds after 2 years of choosing items off the Fresco Menu.

McDonalds has gradually been shifting their image with higher quality items such as better coffee, healthier side options like apple slices and salads, and more recently, the real fruit smoothie (not to be mistaken for actually being healthy).

There is no doubt that many fast-food chains have been part of the blame for obesity issues, so although it isn't surprising they are attempting to save face by offering these healthier choices, it has caused a little bit of a stir from brands such as the authentic smoothie makers, Jamba Juice.

There's no place like...

It is always bittersweet returning from a vacation. As the saying goes, "there is no place like home," but there is also no place like the Big Sur.

Driving up the Pacific Coast Highway is a site to behold. Every twist and turn offers a new vantage point of one of the most breathtaking views to be seen. I have done the drive a few times in the past, but this was the first time I stopped at one of the lodging resorts to spend a few days soaking in the California coast.

Treebones Resort — it is nature at its best. With 16 yurts, 5 camp sites, and 1 human nest, the cozy grounds offer comfortable, "crunchy," lodging experience overlooking the Pacific Ocean. What's a yurt? A yurt is a combination of a tent and cabin-like structure. Each yurt has a large, wooden, rounded frame with a canvas enclosure; a bed; table and chairs; gas fireplace; sink; and by far the best feature being the open domed ceiling which allows a sleeping under the stars experience. This particular area of the Pacific coast happens to house a huge colony of elephant seals, and you are reminded of their presence every night and morning as you listen to the waves crash against the cliffs and hear the chatter of all the elephant seals from somewhere down below.

Breakfast consists of a DIY waffle bar, and the most delectable homemade peanut butter granola you have ever tasted. If you like hard boiled eggs, you might get lucky if you are dining while they boil fresh eggs from the coup. In fact, almost everything you eat has something that came from their garden. Fresh fruits and vegetables hand grown and picked on the grounds, brought to your table every day and night.

During the day, you are on your own to explore the Big Sur and its neighboring restaurants, camp sites, trails, and beaches. It may take a while to get to the next area of inhabitance, but just take in the sights around you and before you know it you might find yourself up at Esalen Spa bathing under the open sky in a natural hot spring spa which is open to the public from 1-3 am!

So if you are overworked, overtired, and need a giant dose of cell-phone free R&R, get ready to get in touch with your inner hippie and do yourself a favor and try out Treebones Resort. Just you, the ocean below, the stars above, and thousands of elephant seals to keep you company.

Summer in Brooklyn

Time flies...it's been too long since my last blog post but I am looking forward to picking it up again.

I am getting situated in my new Brooklyn environment, exploring new neighborhoods, restaurants, shops and things to do. I have truly fallen in love with Prospect Park and at times I feel like I am standing in the middle of a small European city. Bikers flood the road, along with runners and walkers. The smell of charcoal from all the barbecues, and shrieking laughter of all the children running around just puts a smile on my face. It is such a family land, and it is nice to see another side of NYC that I really never knew existed.

I am gaining some new clients, keeping as busy as ever, and looking forward to my continued efforts at turning my new space into "home." Keep an eye on my web site, as I am in the process of a slight re-design with a lot of additional projects to share!

iPad Dilemma: To Buy or Not to Buy

I am a self proclaimed design snob / tech geek. Believe me, I love an excuse for the need to own hot new technology but I have not gotten the iPad itch quite yet.

When I think about all of the capabilities of what this very pretty, brand spanking new device can do, I am not sure I see how it makes my life easier (fellow tech geeks hold your gasps). But what does peak my interest is the new path for creativity - well designed applications.

When it comes to my on-the-go lifestyle, I bring my iPhone, laptop, portable external hard drive (depending on the length of my trip) my iPod shuffle, digital camera, and flip cam. Essentially my entire office in one heavy bag. It already takes me about 20 minutes to undress and unpack my bags to walk through security at an airport which really makes me cringe at the thought of needing to add another bin on the conveyor belt. Would the iPad make my lap top, iPhone, digital camera and Flip Cam obsolete? Not yet.

As a designer, I am looking for ways to make my workflow simpler and faster. I do not need more gadget clutter. Most of my needs are met by using .mac which provides me with my personal ftp and storage space accessed anywhere I can log onto my account. But because I am running programs such as Photoshop, InDesign, and Dreamweaver, I will always need to work off my computer which is loaded up with all my software. When I am away from my desk, I can rely on my iPhone to access email and contacts, and even connect to my .mac account to access a large file to share. All very useful tools to me. The iPad just doesn't seem to take the place of any of my necessities.

The iPhone was the start of all kinds of new apps and the iPad will continue to push the boundaries on user experiences. The way we read a book, the way we play a game, the way we share information is changing and this is just the beginning. With all of these new experiences come a new need for well-designed applications and that is the exciting part of this constantly evolving industry.

It's funny how the iPhone saved our lives a few years ago, and now we cannot be inconvenienced by the small scrolling screen and tiny keypad. And with all of our twittering, face booking and emailing, it is much too difficult to have one app on screen at a time. We must be able to multi-task and see our face book status while emailing and twittering to the world how much we love our iPad.

The introductory low price of $499 is a great plan to target the crowd that can afford to throw their money on a trendy toy, and then use the ridiculous amount of revenue that it will generate during this testing phase to hopefully make the next version of iPad much more smarter and appealing to those looking to spend their money on a tool that will serve a serious need in their every day life.

For now, I am going to continue to bring my paperback book, laptop, portable hard drive, camera, flip cam, iPhone, and iPod shuffle in my gigantic handbag.

But it is ONLY $499....hmmm....

It's Time for Some Spring Cleaning!

And I don't mean mopping the floors and clearing out your closet...

The notion of de-cluttering and cleansing can be beneficial when thinking about how it can be applied to your business.

Here are a few tips to help you freshen up for the rest of the year!

1. There is a lot of clutter in the marketplace, and it is essential that you recognize what makes you different so that you can focus your energy into expanding on that uniqueness, and NOT focusing on the competition.

Take some time to stop and pay attention to all of those unique qualities of your business. Maybe even pull out some of those key words and post them around your office so that you can always be reminded of what makes you, YOU.

2. In order to be clear about why you are in business and what your core value offer is, you should be able to concisely sum up your purpose in one sentence. Make sure your purpose is clearly identifiable and in turn, you will be able to serve your customers more clearly as well.

3. De-clutter your portfolio. We have all had those experiences; the business experience that just doesn't seem to go as planned. No matter what you do, you cannot seem to connect with the client as you more successfully and typically do. Think about what exactly is causing the disconnect, and decide if it is worth struggling to hold on to. If not, let it go. Your time and energy will be much more valuable focusing on attracting your ideal clients.

4. Consumers ARE Brand loyal. If you disagree with this statement, think about the examples of when consumers steer away from a particular brand. Most likely it becomes about money or convenience; 2 factors that are NOT unique selling points to your brand. You want customers to do business with you because of what you offer - why you are different - not because of a cheaper price or a convenience factor.

5. Once you have a customer that you appreciate doing business with, don't let them go! Send loyal customers reminders even when they are not writing you a check, to let them know why you appreciate them. It's their loyalty to you that is going to help build your brand and contribute to the organic growth and success of your company.

Remember, your brand is NOT what you say it is, but what your customers say it is.

So open the windows, take a breath of fresh air, and celebrate all of the (unique) reasons that you are in the business that you are in!

A Little Greenery

Along the right column of my blog, listed under "Greenery" have been a few of my favorite things. I was paging through the April issue of InStyle Magazine and came across a page of fashionably green items that might make the list.

First up - a new pair of sandals for the warmer weather: Greenbees is a company started by two sisters who gave used tires a new purpose. The web site shares the sweet story on how they came up with their idea, tire facts to illustrate the significance of their movement, and the company has even teamed up with Padres Rally for Kids with Cancer to help be a part of something bigger. Overall, a good company with good intentions.

Next we have a simple and fashionable shopping accessory: june15collection has grocery bags, wine bags, cosmetic bags and totes; all are sturdy, washable, and recyclable. The wholesale company is offering a collection of quirky designed bags to help put a little pizzaz in your shopping excursions.

And last but not least, my favorite TOMS shoes have come out with their new Spring Collection. It seems like yesterday I was opening my new ash canvas classics under the Christmas tree, and now it looks like a light blue linen bridgeport might need to part of my Spring wardrobe. (Meanwhile, I am waiting patiently for the women's wedge that should be debuting soon.) It is exciting to see how much this company is growing - in fact, they made Fast Company's list of 2010 most innovative companies - ranked #6 under the retail category.

If you are a googler, then you were reminded every day of the 2010 Winter Olympics by the artwork that changed on a daily basis.

Mountain View, the art department responsible for these "google doodles," tries to keep these images fun and spontaneous and for someone like myself they might also be educational by reminding us of various holidays and special days from around the world. A creative way to take part in current events for sure, and I imagine a pretty cool job to be a doodler for a living!

Jamie Oliver, UK Chef and Humanitarian has an idea.

“I wish for your help to create a strong, sustainable movement to educate every child about food, inspire families to cook again and empower people everywhere to fight obesity.”

Jamie has successfully begun tackling obesity issues throughout Britain, and he has now committed himself to spreading his word here in the US. Attacking the war of obesity in the US (beginning with children) has been an ongoing effort and we are currently witnessing First Lady Michelle Obama work towards curbing this epidemic as well.

WIth his $100,000 award, Jamie is now seeking resources that are going to make this campaign possible. Wouldn't it be great to be able to contribute to such an important movement...

2010 TED talks, "What The World Needs Now" are currently on — in Palm Springs California. I have spent many hours streaming talks of past, to get some insight from those who are out making a mark in the world.

Anything from technology, to design, to science, and global issues to name a few, are the wide range of topics discussed and looks like this year's lineup doesn't disappoint.

Super Bowl Sunday

I'll be honest, the game is never really my focus. Food, drinks, company, and commercials are more of what I am tuned in to. When it comes to advertisements, the occasional extreme humor works here and there, but if in 30 seconds an ad can paint a picture and offer an entire story line that maybe even brings a slight hint of a tear to my eye...that is what I am going to come away with remembering the most.

I admit, I gave a forced chuckle at some singing beavers, pant-less men, and the suggested risque 'seen that before' Danica Patrick ads. As much as I would be curious to see the statistics of those who actually logged on to godaddy.com to "see more," I on the other hand came home to stream my favorite commercial one more time before I turned in for the night.

Google was a new presence tonight, and after reading that they did not intend (oh so cheaply) to produce this feel-good ad for Super Bowl Sunday, their last minute addition is sure to have caught some attention.

The first full week of January is over. I am embarrassed to say it has been a month since my last post. What a busy December...took a winter break with family, battled a nasty winter cold/flu, and considered some New Year's resolutions.

In no particular order:

• Keep growing GBD! (more networking, more self promotion and marketing)

• Buy a new computer and upgrade software

• Keep blogging on a regular basis

• Increase my pace in another 1/2 marathon (maybe 2)

• Work on a better morning routine

• Get more sleep

Instead of being annoyed at the constant repetitive commercials that I have to listen to while watching my morning lineup of Good Morning America and Regis and Kelly (I swear, it ends there. I have never seen the 4th hour of the Today Show), I am actually pumped when I get to listen to to the catchy tunes of some of my new favorites attached below.

Looking forward to seeing how this evolves. Is there a contradiction between having the period at the end of Aol., standing for confidence and completeness (according to Wolff Olins, the agency on the assignment: read NY Times Article here), while constantly changing its background imagery? As much as I love the element of surprise, I also like commitment and hope this new identity will be able to clearly communicate who AOL (soon to be Aol.) is. On the other hand, at this point they have nothing to lose by making a big move like this. I don't know about you, but I certainly forgot about them. I appreciate the risk of a drastic change, vs. playing it safe!

I have been biting my tongue, but I just can't take it any longer. I don't know when it began, but it always makes me wonder. Every year, around Halloween time, it happens again. It teases me to always carry around an extra stash of safety pins in my pocket in the evening hours as I take my post-work, stress relieving runs.

I don't get it?! These things have been taking over lawns during the months of mid-late October to early January for longer than I can remember. Some will creep out for Easter, and others just make themselves comfortable year-round enduring snow, rain, leaves, strollers, dogs and children.

I can't tell you the amount of ugly spiders and witches I saw this year. Ok, that I can SORT of understand. Halloween is an ugly 'holiday' to begin with, so why not celebrate by trashing your lawn with ugly balloons in the shape of ugly creatures. But Christmas? It is such a warm and cozy holiday, and the last thing that gives me the snuggle vibe is a 20 foot Santa swaying back and forth in the wind. Creepy is more like it. And what happened to Thanksgiving? When did Halloween become our signature Fall Holiday, jumping straight to Christmas, passing right over Thanksgiving as if it was not important enough to deserve its own Monster Turkey to take over your front yard?

I digress. This week and always, I am thankful for all the many blessings in my life. I am thankful to have a pillow to rest my head on as I dream of pantone color 385, Gill Sans Bold, and birds chirping in my ear; bountiful (eh, on a good pay period) food to nourish my creative soul; my health which allows me to take those runs every night and discover all of those ghastly inflatable creatures around the neighborhood; and for friends, family, and clients who have been supportive throughout the year.

A Very Green (and Grey) Weekend

This weekend I took my final 2009 West Coast adventure, this time to Seattle and Portland. The occasion? Just to check it out and learn about what life is like on the other side.

My first impression as I landed into clear blue skies and 60 degree weather (other than thinking "is this for real?") was that between the Cascade and Olympic Mountains, the endless miles of emerald greenery, and the active Puget Sound, I had just been painted quite a picturesque environment. But back to reality, we all know Seattle gets its reputation of grey skies and rainy days somehow. Being a northern New Yorker from Buffalo, I understand what it is like to be from a city that is known for its, shall we say unimpressive, weather. If I have spent the majority of my life in freezing snowy conditions, then a little rain shouldn't be all that bad...

I was lucky to be able to spend time with some very kind and creative people who are currently living and working in "SeaTac." The overall trend was apparent early on, they love their city! Everyone made the point that the weather will not stop you from doing anything - and as we drove around Green Lake in the pouring rain, and looked out at the sound from Gas Works Park, there were countless runners, bikers, and walkers just strolling along. With all of the hills, mountains, parks, and bike paths galore, this city is so obviously active all year round.

There is a lot of value and appreciation for the arts, and it shows. There is so much to do just by visiting all of the many exhibits taking place in the museums and galleries. Making my way to Portland, I saw even more evidence of this appreciation from all of the markets and shops.

On the list of things to do in Portland was subjecting my body to a sugar rush one can only get after visiting the famous Voodoo Donut! (check out their web site here) My poison of choice, the vegan (let's stay healthy here) "dirt," was a gigantic raised donut smothered with vanilla glaze and crushed oreo cookies on top. If your teeth hurt at the thought, I think I gave myself a cavity after just one bite. But for the record, I finished it right down to the last crumb. And I would go back for more if I had an opportunity. They are THAT good.

Back in Seattle, I made sure I took a quick ferry ride over to Bainbridge Island. The 30 minute one-way trip is the best way to get the most scenic views of the surrounding area. Even in the rain and fog, it was worth the hour ride.

Overall a fabulous weekend and I am quite certain there will be another visit sooner than later...

"The Magic is in the Hole..."

New York gains New Patience and Fortitude

Whether you have set foot on the steps of the New York City Library or not, you most likely recognize the very proud Patience and Fortitude; Patience being the lion that guards the south side of the library, and Fortitude the north.

Having earned their noble names during the Great Depression, these iconic symbols have been the identity of this remarkable structure, located in the heart of one of the greatest cities of the world.

This week, a new and improved 21st century lion has been released. The updated logo is comprised of much cleaner lines and an overall simpler form which will make it easier to be translated across various mediums.

Still preserving some characteristics of the older mark, the new version is the perfect balance of heritage and contemporary aesthetics. The placement of the type further accentuates the presence of the lion by making that connection of where the line of site is directed – upward and out.

The cost of an email

I wanted to make note of something I read in one of my many blogs and daily emails that I subscribe to. Are you familiar with Seth Godin? He is the author of books such as "Purple Cow," "The Big Moo," "The Dip," and "All Marketers are Liars" (to name a few). "The Purple Cow" was one of the first books I read as I was preparing myself for "the big leap."

For anyone who is working on email marketing strategies (me!), this blog might be more specifically directed towards you. I have been working with various clients on the topic lately and there seems to be two categories of email marketers — well, most may fall into both, but for the most part two ways of looking at it — those who are doing their part to stay on top of all these modern tools of communication, accessing a greater audience in a quicker way, and those who might look at email marketing as a way to save on paper and postage. All are acceptable ways of thinking, but Seth nailed it when he discussed the greater cost of email marketing mistakes – losing customers!

As a marketer, if you subscribe to a service such as Constant Contact, Bronto, or Emma, there are some basic similarities across the board. All allow you to import your entire contact list, and all allow you to break that list into various categories. This is the best tool and should be taken advantage of. There are all kinds of ways to access client information that can help you better serve...a simple survey asking them what kind of information they would want to hear from you about is sooooooo very important! With this basic information, you can now break down your emails by categories and send only to those who are requesting that kind of information. If you send EVERYTHING to EVERYONE, you are only going to annoy your recipients, and could potentially risk them opting out, or worse, lose them as a client or customer forever.

Just because it does not cost you postage to email, WOULD you pay that postage fee to send that piece of information out to that many people? If the answer is no, then you probably need to re-evaluate your strategy.

Books as Art

I caught the tail end of a PBS television series this evening called "Craft in America, a journey to the artists, origins and techniques of American craft." I can't wait to go back and watch what I missed, but I saw a few minutes highlighting North Bennet Street School of Craftmanship (Boston) and more particular, the talented book artist Julie Chen. The printed medium being my first love, I am holding on to any optimism that it will never die and interestingly enough, North Bennet Street bookbinding school has currently seen the longest waiting list in the history of their program.

Traditional letterpress and print-making is one of the most beautiful qualities in graphic and typographic arts. The capabilities are endless.

Julie Chen started her company called Flying Fish Press in 1987. Each story she creates becomes a unique work of art using enormous levels of intricate detail. I can only imagine what it would be like to touch one of her pieces and carefully examine the tremendous amount of time and thought that was invested. As the concepts come to fruition, she completes the process ending with anywhere from a mere 10 to 150 copies.

Rio Makes a Mark

I am sure I will have some more comments in 7 years but for now, while it is fresh, let's talk Olympics.

Congrats to Rio de Janeiro – for a country that has never experienced the home-field advantage it is a much deserved "hoorah!" for all of Brazil.

I was looking at all 4 of the applicant's logos (seen below). One would think that such an honorable undertaking would result in flawless, magical, perfect marks each and every year.

Sigh.

2016 Applicants:

Chicago: As an overall mark – proportions, white space, and font – It's simple but it works for what it is as every detail looks intentionally placed. I like it.

Madrid: The colors are just awkward. I am immediately drawn to the red in the year "2016" and how it matches the red in the middle finger of the hand. This would be an example of researching the meaning of cultural symbols and gestures. Middle finger is not a globally kind gesture.

Tokyo: I like their use of traditional Olympic colors in combination with a native symbol – the knot. I interpret an ongoing future with the lines fading off to the right. It is a little large, but I understand and can appreciate this attempt.

Rio: I would love to see the actual symbol used with different type treatment. The fact that each section of "rio2016" is a different color is just competing with the graphic resting above. If their text was treated with a single color and differentiated with spacing rather than so many colors, it might settle better. It's just too busy.

London 2012:

Oh goodness.

I hated this at first. The fact that there is no connection to the history and tradition of the games other than the knocked out rings is a little disappointing. It seems to appeal more as a fashion statement rather than a tribute to the events. However, the more I look at it the more I can jive with it. I get it, it is young and fresh and energetic. But let's just hope it is still trendy in 2 years.

I know it is far more than a logo that creates the overall experience. That is also part of the fun - seeing how it all unfolds and knowing it started here at square one.

Fall is approaching and on the East Coast that means the weather will quickly turn from pleasant to freezing. But Autumn in New York is spectacular, so I look forward to many photographs and possibly a flip here and there...

A little flip cam goes a long way. I have been getting into the hobby of keeping video diaries, capturing mini clips of everything that I am doing as a way to re-connect to a particular experience in a much deeper way than still photography is able to do.

I don't do this as often as I should, but allow me to throw in a little plug...

Gary Unmarried, starring Jay Mohr, is on its second season starting Wed. night, Sept 23, CBS at 8:30 ET.

Another clever member of the family has ventured into creative writing. Working with a staff of writers, my brother Kevin is a part of one of the coolest jobs in entertainment. All of the behind the scenes work that is involved in producing a television show is remarkable. From casting, to directing, set design, script writing...the list is endless. I look at what goes into the barely 30 minute segment we watch, and it just amazes me that they can execute that exhausting creative process week after week. Writers as a whole are a talented, and genius group of minds and we are so lucky to be able to enjoy their craft in the comfort of our own homes.

If you have ever been to a live taping of a show, then you know what the experience is like. The last one I saw for example, took 5 hours to complete-not to mention the weeks of writing, rehearsing and editing. That's right, a 30 minute segment took 5 hours just to film. If the actors are having a hard time delivering a particular line, then all the writers will gather on the spot and re-write until it comes out better than they anticipate, for they can only hope that their words get translated as they had envisioned. But don't get me wrong, the mistakes surely are nothing to snore over - each take seems to get funnier and funnier, especially when the actors are having a tough time keeping it together themselves. But what I loved about this cast was how aware and grateful they were for their live audience. Even the slightest interaction with us helped to keep the energy of the show going — even if it was 5 hours later!

If we were allowed to photograph the stage, believe me I would share as much as I could. It is so neat to see how each set is just lined up in a row. Gary's living room next to Allison's kitchen, and a few new spots that I suppose I should not discuss until the show actually airs. Every detail is meticulously placed and marked so that week after week, the lamp is in the same place, the photos on the wall are in tact, and any scrapes in the painting of the rooms are cleaned up so it is a seamless transition from episode to episode. Creative in its own way, whether a play, musical, movie or television show, the stage design is what brings the story to life, making it seem more of a reality rather than just our imagination!

Congrats to another season of Gary Unmarried and may there be more to come!

A time to celebrate!

I can't believe it has been a month since my last posting.

The past few weeks have been very exciting. My brother just got married here in LA, and what a beautiful event it was!

Having attended a few other weddings over the past few months, each special in their own way, it has been very interesting to see how every couple brings in their style and personality, and how that background is then reflected on their marriage celebration. From timeless and classic, to vibrant pops of colors, and the merging of various cultures...it really is a wonderful time to recognize all of these unique characteristics.

A few weeks ago I was watching step dancers perform at an Irish wedding, whereas 2 weekends ago I was enjoying some traditional Indian dancing. Colors, patterns, along with music and dance can clearly identify a particular culture. Simple and ordinary elements that when combined, become so much more, reminding us of rich history and tradition. I was honored to be a part of these events, and I am happy to share a glimpse into my summer below...

Everyone needs a mental break at times to rejuvenate, and for a creative business some time away fully unplugged can trigger new creativity.

I just returned from my week-long mental break — an amazing vacation in California. I was fortunate enough to experience two must-see places: Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park.

Lake Tahoe is ideal. The water is as blue as the sky, the weather is sunny and beautiful, and there is the perfect balance of beach and activities that would please just about anyone. I took a lot of hikes around the lake, rafted down the Truckee river, and enjoyed picnics on the beach to watch the sunset over the mountains. It was paradise, and I can't wait to spend more time there again one day.

Yosemite National Park was awe-inspiring, to say the least! I cannot believe a place like this exists — wild animals co-habitating among campers and hikers, some of the most majestic scenes you have ever laid eyes on such as the numerous waterfalls and iconic mountains Half Dome and El Capitan, and the never-ending trails and scenic overlooks that could keep you entertained day after day. There is so much to do, but if you have never been I suggest taking your time to explore as much as possible. It is exhausting, but as long as you take time out to be lazy in a creek somewhere, it is an astonishing playground for all ages.

I saw a lot, but the last full day my brave partner in crime and I took the extremely strenuous hike up to Half Dome. That is just about the only memory I have at the moment, as it has left such a huge impact on me!

The 17 mile trip needed to start as early as possible. It is always hard to tell what kind of sky you are going to have nearly 10,000 ft. up, so by setting out before sunrise you have a greater chance of making it up by noon, only to start your remaining four hour descent by 1:00 with the intent to be down before dusk. The weather could also creep up to 100 degrees, and when you are standing in the clouds, that sun is HOT which makes the trip all the more difficult.

We got going around 5:30 in the morning, with a few gallons of water and Gatorade, and as many power bars, PB&Js and trail mix as we could carry on our back. The first few hours we walked up alongside the river, and stood a lot closer to rushing, rocky water falls than I needed to be! I was amazed the variety of people I saw that had taken the trip even this far: elderly with walking sticks, children well under the age of 5, all along the most athletic and fit group of people.

But the most challenging part of the trip was when we reached the last 2 miles of our destination. Words cannot express the emotions that rushed through as we were literally free climbing up the face of Lady Half Dome herself. With nothing but a 10,000 foot fall below, there was no choice but to keep going up, focusing only on each step that was carefully placed. There was no opportunity to look down. The slight views I had out of the corner of my eyes I had to quickly shut out because for the first time in my life I was experiencing true vertigo.

Once we tackled the first hump it leveled out for a few feet, and there it was...the famous cable line! At the base of the climb there were hundreds of pairs of utility gloves which you need to wear to assist in hoisting yourself up the line. After scaling it up (not down) for a few minutes, we made our way over. I took about 3 steps up and my gut said "get off!" Brian on the other hand continued up with some of the others while I nervously sat clawing onto a rock watching him. I would say about 50% of the people who made it to this point looked up and said, "no thank you." Those that made their way back down were practically speechless. Some said they couldn't enjoy the view because they were too frantic about getting back down, while others said it was the best thing they had ever experienced. Having no regret on my decision to stay put, all I was thinking was, "how are we going to get down from here?!" I am shocked there are no cables on the first hump as there is literally nothing but a sheet of granite that you have to have confidence that your shoes will grip. Some areas have mini step-like formations which make it somewhat more feasible, but it is sloooooow and steady until back on a dirt path.

Once we got off the face, it was easier to gain some speed on our walk and although we were aching, we managed to make it down in about 4 hours. It was more comforting at that point to stop and take in some of the scenery along the route. Fellow hikers who were just making their way up exchanged nervous looks with us, as if to be begging us for our story. There is no other way to do it then to go in blindly or else I don't think anyone in their right mind would attempt the trek. The treacherous route was a given, but the threat of any storm clouds rolling in (half dome gets struck by lightning regularly and people have died from being stuck up in a storm-it's most recent being June 2009) or the chance of a bear, coyote, or mountain lion encounter were just some of the other elements we were dealing with throughout the 9 hour trip.

After making it back down into the valley, we couldn't wait to submerge ourselves in the ice-cold creek to let the flow of the water heal our muscles. I am thrilled that I have done it, but I can confidently say that I will NEVER do it again.

Overall we had an amazing vacation. I am refreshed and happy to be back at work....let the creative juices flow!

I have been in the habit of searching the web for products that offer something more than just the item you are purchasing. Maybe it is because I — like most people — have been very conscious of how I am spending any money that I have, so coming away with that little extra something special seems to leave a longer impression and greater period of satisfaction.

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to take a trip to Sanoma last weekend, while having a mini reunion with some old college friends. A girls weekend in wine country, doesn't get much better than that!

The first vineyard we visited was Ledson winery. From the moment you set foot on the development, you felt the heritage. The giant castle-like structure with acres upon acres of land was like something from a story book. Once inside, the interior supported this historic ambiance, and the staff was overly friendly and accommodating to groups of any size.

We worked our way to a few more vineyards, including Chateau St. Jean and Mayo — Mayo being a smaller more boutique-style experience.

It was only natural that I was eyeballing the labels at each wine tasting, which made me think about how much a label influences the purchase of a product as plentiful as wine. From the moment you walk into a wine shop, or liquor store, and in some states even the grocery store, you are bombarded with various grapes, and regions and flavors galore. If you are more educated on the topic, you most likely either head straight for the brand that you trust and love, or you look to try something new, and can distinctively describe your palette to someone who will direct you to a recommended bottle. If you are a bargain hunter, you might be making your selection based on the price, and secondly the label. I imagine one shopping for wine in a grocery store is probably using that same strategy, vs. a more intimate shopping experience in a specialty wine shop where you have more hands-on assistance in selecting the best wine to suit your needs.

So what influences consumers to become brand-conscious of the wine they drink? Package design not only supports the sale of a product, but it also serves as a lingering marketing tool when displayed on a shelf in your home, or placed on the table throughout a meal. Every time you are looking at the package, the brand is making another impression in your mind. I can't count the number of times that I have been to a party where someone as brought a bottle because they liked the label, or how many times I have remembered a brand that I liked when at a restaurant or dinner party, logging that bottle in the back of my mind for quick recognizability the next time I am shopping. Even if I think about it now, one of my favorite wines is an Albarino and all I can recall is that there is a harp or something similar printed on the front. Other than knowing that I love the taste, that is all I ever would need to know when looking to purchase that wine again.

Overall, the labels I came across while in Sanoma would be characterized as "Heritage." It reflects longevity and often has an image of the vineyard incorporated on the graphic.

Public art always seems to generate a hype when it is unveiled. Those who appreciate it will travel to galleries and exhibits to celebrate the artist's message, but when you expose the general public by installing artwork in the natural surroundings, there are always mixed emotions.

I have been in New York City to experience "The Gates" and "Waterfalls," and the fact that it prompted controversial discussions and was unexpected made for a successful installation in my opinion.

We are seeing more public art as a way to communicate awareness on important issues. One recent statement can be seen through the "Cool Globes: Hot Ideas for a Cooler Planet" project. (www.coolglobes.com)

Coca Cola (UK) has sponsored a project in an attempt to be the largest recycled art installation, bringing awareness to the importance of recycling aluminum cans.

While I am all about giving up the sugary stuff and reducing the use of cans and bottles (Dasani water also being a Coke product), this would be an example of a brand positioning themselves to ensure they are staying on top of industry movements and trends, adapting their message to be current yet maintain the history of the classic product. The irony of "trashing" an English countryside for arts sake is supposed to make the big point in honor of UK's National Recycling Week (www.recyclenow.com)

High Line Opens

The first time I experienced Manhattan's High Line was about 5 years ago on a brisk New Year's Eve. My brother was in town, and we attended a Holiday Party at a friend's photography studio on the West Side — the neighborhood where the High Line once ran above. As soon as midnight hit, we all ventured up the stairwell to the roof of the building with plenty of flashlights and helping hands, and it was quite clear that we were entering at our own risk. Old mangled barbed wire and broken tracks were barely visible with the guidance of city lights. We carefully crept along the tracks - exchanging well wishes for the New Year with other neighboring track walkers. Just imagining that the floor below us was once the means of highly industrial traffic route felt like I was walking across a secret that only those who were in our club were experiencing.

Last week, I took my second visit over to the High Line. This time, in a more welcoming approach via the Gansevoort entrance. As the new park has just opened up, it was exciting to get a first-time look at all the careful design and preservation that went into creating what I am sure will become one of Manhattan's most treasured features. You know you are experiencing something modern and new from the clean lines and "green" approach to the park, yet important details such as the way the tracks are incorporated into the flower beds, and the way some lounge chairs are built on train wheels remind us that this is a piece of Manhattan history. Surrounding architecture, new and old, help to reinforce this mixing and blending of time.

Having been under planning for years, the first phase of the project has opened to the public, in perfect timing for the summer season, and I look forward to returning when more has been completed. It truly is a unique way to walk along the West Side— so pack a picnic, bring your camera, and enjoy a summer sunset!

"7 whole grains on a mission"

The foods I eat, the products I buy, and just my overall lifestyle has made me aware of some pretty "cool" companies who have built their brand in a socially responsible manner.

If you have any similar interest, I would encourage you to take a moment and visit the Kashi web site. Most are familiar with their tag line "7 whole grains on a mission," and I consider a brand to be very successful when they literally eat, breathe, and live their mantra.

The other day I was in the super market roaming the cereal aisle and I noticed that Kashi had come out with a new product: Kashi U, a cereal developed to promote the vitality of life. Made from 100% recycled paper (as most of their packaging is) it was printed on raw kraft paper as opposed to the other more sleek and shiny coated boxes you are used to seeing. I am not saying that I love the artwork, but it absolutely stood out among it's competitors, and it just looked like something I wanted to buy. I don't even think I like currants and walnuts in my cereal, but I wanted that box in my cupboard. Maybe I am just a sucker for anything au naturale?

In addition to buying a product for the sake of the box, I then went home and got online to look up their latest marketing efforts to see what else they were up to. Their web site offers a lot of useful tools and tips to promote a healthier lifestyle. A list of products were just one section of the site, and actually not what I was interested in looking at but found myself reading through various blogs and articles and recipes. Kudos to Kashi.

Running Home

This past Sunday, I ran my first half marathon. Overall, a very exciting day and I was appreciative to have the 2 hours and 24 minutes to tour my home-town, seeing it from a new perspective.

The months preceding my official launch of GreenBird Design, I set aside some personal goals to go along with my new business journey. It was important to me that I learned to make time every day for myself, whether that meant taking some dance classes, going for a drive or walk, getting back into painting and drawing, or...going for a daily run! 4 months ago I could not run more than a mile or 2, and now I find that I have fallen in love with the sport. Certainly not because I love the pounding pressure on my knees, or the winded shortened breaths, but because for 20 minutes, or an hour, or even 2 hours, I am away from the computer, phone, email, and my head is cleared as I just take off and go!

Training the past 3 months for my goal of crossing the finish line involved a lot of exploring of nearby neighborhoods. What was great about the marathon was that I was able to run through some areas that one would typically not find themselves in — some old industrial parts of the City, the beautiful (yet empty) waterfront, and in and out of Buffalo's downtown architectural gems. Every turn offered a new flavor of Buffalo's history and as I looked around and noticed the sea of runners in front of me and those behind me, it was amazing the feeling of empowerment that took over my mind and my body. Some people were running for a cause - so I spent the first few miles reading all the messages on t-shirts as that sea ran past me! So inspirational. Others were probably just like me, trying to accomplish a personal goal that would prove to be so much more than simply running 13.2 miles.

The most exhilarating part of the day was crossing the finish line. It truly was something I had never experienced before. It was a great experience and I can't wait to do it again!

Whether you prefer Poland Spring, Dasani, Evian, or store brand, plastic water bottles are only recycled 14% of the time – eek! Thankfully, there are plenty of new options for guilt-less drinking.

I can't imagine strolling the beverage section and choosing a big plastic jug when a message like this is an "in your face" reminder of the simple choices we can make that will make a difference.
